Title: Armin van Buuren @ Godskitchen April 3
Post by: jdubb on February 16, 2004, 01:31:30 PM
Armin comes to LA as we see the full effect of the recent Godskitchen/Spundae deal.  This event will be held at Circus in Hollywood.  Tickets aren't on sale yet, but this is sure to be an amazing night.

We have pictures coming soon...  keep checking back in the photos section.  In fact we have about a month's worth of pictures that need to be added.  Soon.  That's all we can say.

Since everyone else is slacking at writing a review of the event... guess I will.

Let's see.  We headed out around 9 because we knew the place would be a zoo.  The line reminded me of days of old.  Even at a little after 9 it was winding through the parking lot.  Line passes came in very handy.  It wasn't too packed when we got in, but quickly filled up.  It was great to see such a turn out.  People I hadn't seen in years were all wandering through the crowd.  It almost felt like late 2000 all over again.

Kazell spun an excellent set for the second night in a row (his set the night before at Friction was great).  Armin came on around 1 and spun the rest of the night.  His set was a great trance epic.  It had some of the flavor of a set from the late 90s, but the tracks were definitely all new.  An example was the Binary Finary track 2004 (Orbit Mix).  Although called 2004, it has all the elements of the original 1998.  Armin also threw down a nice remix of Paul van Dyk's Crush.  I think it might have been the PvD mix from the Positiva 12", but I could be wrong.  For the most part, though, the song selection was a little more on the vocal side of trance.

He also spun a little Gabriel & Dresden, which was cool because Dave Dresden was hanging out behind the dj booth for most of the night.  Dave was great and took a little time to answer a few questions.  I asked how he like living in the Bay Area and he said prices are way too high and that he had just moved across the Bay from San Francisco over to Oakland (my old stomping grounds).  Of course I asked what we could expect from G&D in the near future.  He said to look for a mix album coming out on Nettwerk Records and possibly a new Motorcycle single on Positiva.  Dave reminded me that they will be back in town in a few weeks to headline Spundae.  My recommendation:  Be sure to check Gabriel & Dresden out on April 24th to hear what the hype is about.  It is great to see things going well for them, they deserve it!

So anyway, back to the night at hand.  I can't really say too much more about it.  The crowd was enthusiastic and positively charged.  My only issue was that the main room was a little too crowded to dance since no one was in the house room and there were too many people puddling in the back and sides of the room.  Otherwise it was a great night.  I'd say Godskitchen's first night in Los Angeles was a definite success.

 :)
